In 2018, we ran our first electoral program and elected candidates across the country – including Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a member who finally represented our generation. One week later, we planned a sit-in in Speaker Pelosi’s office. Now that young people had elected Democrats in record numbers to take back the House, we knew it was time to demand more from our leaders on climate.
That day, we set a new agenda for the Democratic Party in the House, and our movement took off. Suddenly, the Green New Deal was everywhere. Thousands of young people across the country stood up in the fight against climate change and joined hubs. We went from one dozen hubs to over 100 by the end of the year. And we forced over 100 members of Congress to sign on to the Green New Deal resolution.
