Statement on accusations against NY AG Eric Schneiderman
On several occasions, Sunrise has expressed enthusiasm towards NY AG Eric Schneiderman for his leadership as a climate advocate. So we felt the need to speak out about the unfolding accusations by four women of abuse against Schneiderman. We want to be absolutely clear. While the AG has stood with values that we believe in before, his behavior is absolutely unacceptable and follows a disturbing pattern of powerful, wealthy men taking advantage of and hurting women.
One of our principles as Sunrise is “We stand with other movements for change”. We have been inspired and moved by the #MeToo campaign and many others like it that work to make our world safer and healthier for all people. The same worldview of domination that teaches men that they can dominate, control, and abuse others without consequence teaches us that we can dominate, control, and abuse our environment. We cannot stand for it in a world where our fates are so linked.
We can build a world where all people are valued, regardless of the color of our skin, our gender, or how much money we have in our pockets. We can build a world where we care for one another and the earth.
We build that world both through changing laws and policies, and through the actions we take and the ways that we treat each other each and every day.
