Sunrise endorses Nida Allam for North Carolina’s 4th
Nida Allam is a young, progressive activist and the first Muslim woman ever elected in North Carolina, running for Congress in NC-04.
Nida is an activist, like us, who got her start in organizing when she worked for Bernie Sanders in 2016. When three of her close friends were killed in a hate crime, Nida threw herself into organizing to fight for a just and livable society for marginalized communities. As County Commissioner, she raised the minimum wage for county employees to $15 per hour, she has been a strong advocate for young people on the ground, and is now running on a Green New Deal – something close to her, as part of her district faces severely high cancer rates and environmental disasters as a result of power plants and coal ash spills.
Our movement is proud to support Nida – an organizer like us who has lived through the same crises we have, and who will be a bold Green New Deal champion for us in Congress.
“I will cosponsor the Green New Deal on day one. The issue of climate change is personal to me and so many other young people in NC-6, especially students at our three major universities. Our generation will be living with the effects of climate change, which means that we need to demand bold climate action.
In North Carolina, we’re already seeing the effects of the climate crisis in the form of unprecedented hurricanes, forest fires, and droughts that affect our farmers. The Green New Deal is the only legislation that would demand climate action on an acceptable timeline while creating millions of good-paying jobs and providing a just transition to fossil fuel industry workers. I was recently endorsed by both Sunrise Durham and Sunrise NC in my campaign and I’m looking forward to partnering with youth-led organizations to ensure we have a livable planet.”Nida Allam
