Let's build the Sunrise of our dreams!

Reimagining Sunrise

Join a Movement Input Session

👉 to weigh in on the new draft ‘movement DNA’ for Sunrise 2.0 👈

Sunrise Movement has achieved things in our first five years that were supposed to be impossible. In the next 10 years, we’re gonna need to achieve more supposedly “impossible” things, because everything we love depends on it.

As 2021 comes to a close, we’ve won more for climate justice than has ever been won in the United States. The hunger strikers, with their courage and sacrifice, are leading us into an even fiercer era of the fight for the Green New Deal. But we’re painfully aware that all we have won will not be enough, and we know that our movement will need to transform in order to build the power we need to win a real Green New Deal.

Over the past year, the Frontloading Team — made up of volunteers and staff from many different hubs, regions and walks of life — has been wrestling with this question of how our movement needs to transform to win the livable future we deserve. They have developed a new ‘movement DNA’ — an updated strategy, structure, story and culture — for the Sunrise 2.0, and they’re finally ready to share this draft with us so we can shape and hone it together.

The Process: 🌅

The draft movement DNA for Sunrise 2.0 is just the beginning! Now it’s time for all of us as movement members to grapple with this new DNA, consider how it will work in our communities, and share our feedback in order to reshape the current draft.

In early spring, the whole movement membership will vote on whether to ratify or reject the final proposal of the new movement DNA. The Frontloading team will be reworking the DNA in between now and then based on feedback collected from our movement, the public, and trusted partners. In order to make the final proposal as strong as possible, everyone needs to contribute — so your input on the current draft is vital.

How can you give your input? 🤔

We are holding six “Reimagining Sunrise: Movement Input Sessions.” There are two different modules — one that will discuss elements of the proposed new story & strategy, and one that will discuss elements of the proposed new structure and culture (i.e. Decision-Making, Democracy, Hubs & Principles). Each module will be shared three times through November and December.

You can attend just one session or you can attend both sessions. If we were holding these sessions in person, we’d provide dinner for everyone — but they’re happening online, so we’ll provide a $25 meal voucher to everyone who attends to say thank you for your time and insights.

Advanced Sessions 🤓

We are going to be offering three “Advanced Input” sessions in December including:

  1. Developing the DNA Ratification Process
  2. Developing Sunrise’s Ideology
  3. Developing Sunrise’s Movement Support Structures

These sessions will build upon the “Story & Strategy” and “Structure & Culture” sessions offered in November, so we encourage you to attend those sessions or independently review the material before attending an Advanced Session.

  • How should movement members have greater say in decision-making?
  • Which decisions should be democratically decided by the whole movement?
  • What are the new principles for Sunrise 2.0?

Note: Each of the options below offer the exact same content. There are 3 options to enable more people with different schedules to participate.

Advanced Sessions:

NOTE: Youare encouraged to attend the “Story & Strategy” and “Structure & Culture” sessions before attending the Advanced Sessions below OR to independently review the material from those sessions before attending.

Developing the DNA Ratification Process

Did you already attend the Structure/Culture Input Session? Want to help us make the plan for how the movement votes on the plan for Sunrise 2.0? Join this bonus session with members of the Frontloading Team.

This will be a collaborative workshop. The Frontloading team will share the timeline and the goals of the ratification process — how the movement will vote to approve or reject parts of the new plan. Then the full group will dig into the big questions around the process: How do movement members vote? How should voices be weighted? How can the Frontloading team bring the strongest possible proposal to movement members?

Good Jobs For All

Developing Sunrise’s Ideology

Did you already attend one of the Input Sessions on Structure/Culture or Story/Strategy? Do you want to help shape Sunrise’s ideology and approach to multiracial democratic socialism? Join this bonus session with members of the Frontloading Team to share your perspective with the team and hear from others across the movement.

Don’t know what ideology means? You’re not alone! At its core, ideology is a set of beliefs about how power should be organized in society. Sunrise 1.0 didn’t take on an explicit ideology and we were trained to sidestep questions of socialism. That served us in some ways and allowed us to build a broad movement. But now we think we need to be clearer about what we believe and the kind of world we want to build.

During this session, the frontloading team will share some proposals. Then, there will be time for movement members to share experiences on the ground and opinions on how Sunrise should approach ideology. The Frontloading Team wants to ask you: What will be the benefits and costs of being more explicit about our ideology in your local context?

Developing Sunrise’s Movement Support Structures

Did you already attend one of the Input Sessions on Structure/Culture or Story/Strategy? Do you want to help us make plans for how the national organization supports hubs and local organizing? Join this bonus session with members of the Frontloading Team to help them understand what hubs want from the national organization over the next 5 years.

This will be a collaborative workshop and discuss questions including: What training and coaching support should the national organization provide? How should identity based constituencies and caucus operate? Should there be role networks for people with similar roles in different hubs to discuss learnings?
